I sincerely hope hospital administration reads this and actually investigates
Only giving 1 star so I could leave a review! I honestly don’t know how a hospital can treat a brand-new mother and father this way. My son and daughter-in-law went to this hospital because Labor and Delivery called them and told them to come in so she wouldn’t miss her opportunity to get an epidural. They listened, trusted the hospital, and came in when they were told to. What followed was completely unacceptable. My daughter-in-law is a first-time mother, and instead of being surrounded by caring people who understood that she was scared, nervous, and had questions, she was made to feel like she was an inconvenience. It took hours for someone to come into their room. When staff finally did come in, the attitude and lack of compassion were unbelievable. We were also told that we were not allowed to record. At the time, we didn’t understand why. After witnessing the way some of the staff treated my daughter-in-law and the way they spoke to new parents, I can’t help but wonder why they wouldn’t want these interactions documented. The staff member who appeared to work with the newborns was, by far, one of the most unpleasant people we encountered. She was rude, impatient, and became angry when questions were asked. These were first-time parents asking questions about their newborn baby. That’s what they’re supposed to do! Instead of educating them and reassuring them, she made them feel stupid for asking. And what I witnessed with the baby was extremely upsetting. I saw this employee grab the newborn by the arm and place her onto the little bed while she was visibly upset. Watching someone handle a brand-new baby that way was disturbing and completely unacceptable from our family’s perspective. Then my daughter-in-law was moved upstairs, and the lack of support continued. Nobody properly showed her how to nurse or took the time to teach her what she needed to know. When she asked questions, rather than getting the help and encouragement a new mother deserves, she was made to feel stupid. This is someone’s first experience becoming a mother. She should have been encouraged. She should have been taught. She should have been reassured. She should have been treated with kindness and respect. Instead, she left this experience feeling ignored, embarrassed, frustrated, and traumatized by the way she was treated. A hospital should be a place where a woman feels safe during one of the most vulnerable moments of her life. New mothers should not be afraid to ask questions. New fathers shouldn’t feel like they are in the way. And nobody should make parents feel stupid for wanting to understand how to care for their own baby. The birth of a child should be one of the happiest days of a family’s life. This hospital took what should have been a beautiful experience and turned it into one that our family will never forget for all the wrong reasons. New moms and dads deserve better. Babies deserve better. And families deserve to be treated with compassion, patience, dignity, and respect.
