To the corporate billing machine behind this non-profit facade: 1 Star
?If you are uninsured or self-pay, WATCH YOUR BACK WHEN YOU WALK THROUGH THESE DOORS. ?This hospital claims tax-exempt non-profit status, but the second you step out of the ER, the corporate apparatus treats cash-paying patients like a cash cow. They will hit you with astronomical, inflated "chargemaster" list prices that bear zero resemblance to fair-market reality, Medicare rates, or the actual cost of care. ?When you try to resolve it rationally, the 1-833 phone queue is a total roadblock. The front-line call center reps have zero authority to negotiate, apply fair-market benchmarks, or make real adjustments. They exist to stonewall you and push rigid payment plans on fake prices. They make it practically impossible to reach a manager who holds signing authority unless you dig up local corporate administrative numbers at Palmetto Commerce or hit their executives with certified mail and formal legal disputes. ?It is pure extortion. They hide behind their "charitable" tax exemption while sticking uninsured working people with predatory bills and making you fight tooth and nail just to get a fair number. ?Advice for any uninsured patient coming here: ?Get every single line item documented. ?Do NOT accept their initial sticker price as real. ?Skip the useless phone queue reps—demand the Director of Patient Financial Services or send a formal certified settlement letter directly to local Hospital Administration. An absolute predator of a billing department. Stand your ground and do not let them run you over. Roper St. Francis operates as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charitable hospital, built on a statutory mandate to serve the community and care for the poor. Yet, they exploit a major loophole: outsourcing their Emergency Room to aggressive third-party contractor groups (Broad River Physicians Group / ApolloMD / The Bortolazzo Group). The ER is where the poor and uninsured go in an emergency. Farming out ER care to corporate contractors allows them to dodge non-profit financial protections and unleash predatory debt practices on cash-paying working people. Current Dispute Status: Paper Trail Evasion: I formally disputed inflated charges (CPT 99283 / CPT 10060) using regional fair-market benchmarks and submitted a lump-sum settlement offer. Their billing resolution desk immediately tried to force phone calls, deliberately ignoring explicit instructions to keep all communications strictly in writing to avoid leaving a record. The "HIPAA" Shield: Their canned public response below claiming "HIPAA regulations" prohibit them from helping here is just PR cover. Private dispute portals and certified mail are where the actual stone-walling happens.

I left Roper hospital worse than when I arrived
To much to explain about the situations that I had experienced while inpatient. Most horrible hospital experience I’ve ever experienced.

Was totally dissatisfied in the care I received
Upon checking into Roper Mount Pleasant. I was told that they no longer have an ultrasound tech after four P.M. I would have to be sent to the downtown location. Initially. I was told that I would have two co-pays. Then they did a transfer. Which eliminated that no blood work done. Nothing based on the symptoms that I was showing. After getting to the downtown Location, they didn’t ultrasound for blood clots. I will say the ultrasound technician was exceptional. Very caring. Other than that doctors very elusive nurses very elusive. When I return from getting my ultrasound. There was a Bill laying on my clothes for $375. Financial rep came in and said that I had a co-pay I told her I already paid my co-pay at the previous Location. I was given medication. Never touched. No bloodwork. Nothing other than the ultrasound for blood clots. As of today. I’m still in pain. Not really sure what’s going on. The doctor said he thinks it’s my back but my leg is hurting. I think it has something to do with nerves. However, I’m not a doctor, so I can’t diagnose, but I don’t think that I got the proper care I should ever received.

This catholic hospital just wants your money that’s all, they don’t actually care
This hospital is absolute horrific, and I work in the ER out of state at safety net hospital. I wouldn’t send my worst enemy here. NOBODY CAN DO THEIR JOB. I was here with my mother for two weeks due to septic shock. The surgeon Dr. Desart never came up to speak or explain procedures, nor recovery timeline. The nurses were purely incompetent, and couldn’t accurately place IV or PICC. The social worker was one of the rudest individuals within SW I have ever encountered. I tried to contact patient advocate multiple times and they NEVER responded. The list could go on, but please go to MUSC. I am so disgusted by the treatment and hospital staff I could scream. I will be reporting this to the state and additionally JCAHO.

I have never had a good experience with Roper Hospital
Definitely not a good experience. The Charleston GI doctor did not send the necessary information on why the biopsy was ordered. The doctor who was doing the biopsy wanted to reschedule. I refused to reschedule I had waited for more than another hour.

I use to love Roper, since Covid it has never been the same
I am not sure where Roper's client care went to, but they need to bring it back. I was scheduled foe for a ct scan , specifically asked did I need oral contrast. The scheduler said no, it is iv contrast. So I agreed to do it on my lunch break. I called back scheduling 4 days before the appointment to confirm, they said no worries it is iv contrast. I showed up early, checked in. I sat in the imaging waiting room for 30 mins past my scheduled appointment time. Here comes a lady with 3 bottles of contrast to drink. I politely told her no ma'am that is not what I was told and now I don't have time to drink this for the appointment. She said wait a minute. Another ct tech came in and was not very nice and explained that scheduling people don't know anything and it is my doctor's fault. I heard that several times. So needless to say, I did not have the test, the techs have no bedside manners, and instead of taking ownership they blamed the doctor. This is ridiculous.

No clean sheets no showers and left to myself for long periods
I was there for a week no clean sheets no showers and left to myself for long periods of times because short handed in nurses. Test were performed that was unnecessary and the blood and iron transfusions were not enough.

I brought my daughter in August 20 2022. We were not told our insurance would not be accepted. Started getting bills and I immediately called and requested a financial assistance application. It never came. I have called on 9/12, 10/11 and 11/7. Each time I'm told they will have a supervisor contact me and expedite getting the application in the mail. One of the bills was about to hit collections so I had to set up a payment plan that a single mom on SSDI can't afford. If I do not do the same for the other bills, my credit will be affected. The hospital response is just go ahead and set up payment plans. After the 5th call I find out they never tried to run the insurance when the emergency department made a copy of our insurance card.
